Brother Rice High School, a perennial Eight Mile partner, brought over 65 student and parent volunteers for their 2013 All-School Day of Service on Monday, October 28th.

The volunteers helped overhaul pedestrian pathways on Eight Mile Road between Woodward and John R, near the Grand Truck Railroad Bridge. This area is used by many to access the new Gateway Marketplace and Meijer at Eight Mile and Woodward.

Volunteers removed approximately two dumpsters full of litter, debris and vegetation from the corridor. Additionally they painted fire hydrants and guardrails along the sidewalk. We are grateful to our friends at Brother Rice for their latest service to the Eight Mile corridor which, as always, provided a significant aesthetic boost to the area.

8MBA teamed up with the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) for our latest blight-busting effort, and this month we completed the removal of 65 broken payphones along Eight Mile between Grand River and Kelly. 8MBA conducted a field inventory of payphones and the MPSC cleared the way for removal and recycling of phone materials.

8MBA thanks the MPSC for their partnership on this collective effort. A common eyesore and roadblock to private property improvements is now addressed and will be monitored on a corridor-wide scale.

Property owners are strongly advised to not attempt payphone removal.
Please email Jordan Twardy with any information about defunct Eight Mile payphones.

Another successful 8MBA Golf Outing is in the books after out 9th Annual event on September 20th at Whispering Willows Golf Course in Livonia.

Eight Mile businesses, communities and other stakeholders joined us on the links, where the Detroit Renegades Motorcycle Club edged out Anderson, Eckstein and Westrick, Inc and last year's champions, Fifth Third Bank, to take home the coveted AT&T CommUNITY Cup.

The Miss Michigan organization, in partnership with CITGO, also helped set a festive tone, bringing Miss West Michigan, Mekeisha Alcock and Miss River Raisin Festival, Nicole Miller, to mingle and pose for photos with golfers.

8MBA thanks everyone who sponsored and participated in this year's outing. Visit our Flickr to browse event photos. Don't forget to tag yourself!

8MBA staff participated in the October 2nd meeting of the Michigan State Land Bank Fast Track Authority, which voted to approve the sale of the Michigan State Fairgrounds to Magic Plus LLC for $4.65M.

8MBA Executive Director, Tami Salisbury, was on hand for a press conference following the meeting, calling this a "momentous day for Eight Mile," as one of it's most renowned yet challenged sites moves significantly closer to positive progress.

The next steps for the fairgrounds include a series of visioning sessions - advocated for by 8MBA as part of the purchase agreement - to be held with community stakeholders. These sessions will ensure that the shared concerns and vision of the community at large will be incorportated into the development. Fairgrounds developer and 8MBA Board Member, Redico, who was the development team behind the adjacent Gateway Marketplace project, will facilitate the visioning sesions.

8MBA is thrilled to see progress at this important site and looks forward to continuing to engage all parties as a bright future for the Michigan State Fairgrounds site unfolds.

The Regional Transit Authority for Southeast Michigan (RTA)  has completed its appointments to the Citizens Advisory Council (CAC), and 8MBA Executive Director Tami Salisbury was selected to serve alongside 29 other leaders throughout the region.

The purpose of the CAC is to advise the RTA on transit issues, make suggestions for improvements in transit service and to advocate for greater funding for public transportation. CAC members can review and comment on all transit service and coordination plans, as well as provide specific recommendations for those plans or to address any other matters concerning public transit in the region.

8MBA's presence on the CAC will help ensure that Eight Mile and the communities along it will have a voice in shaping the region's future public transit system.
