The mile roads system in Michigan originated from the Land Ordinance Act of 1785. A line from Michigan's east to west lake shores was labeled the baseline. This is the Eight Mile Road that we know today. It is a county line across the state, and after jumping over Lake Michigan, is the state line between Wisconsin and Illinois.
The baseline and meridian (north to south line) are the measuring points for the township range numbers which appears as a part of property descriptions on deeds.
Eight Mile Boulevard has a rich history and a bright future. The Eight Mile Boulevard Association was formed in 1993 to revitalize and promote the Eight Mile transportation, business and residential corridor by linking the efforts of the public and private sectors. Our borders include I-94 to the east and I-275 to the west.
